Position Summary:

Bet Tzedek Legal Services promotes social and economic justice for our clients by providing free legal services to those with low income. Through our network of pro-bono panel attorneys, Bet Tzedek provides legal representation on a variety of civil legal matters impacting low income clients. Bet Tzedek also works directly with clients to assist them in obtaining or maximizing their SNAP (food stamp) Benefits and similar benefits.

The Program Director is responsible for overall leadership and operations of the Bet Tzedek Legal Service Program. The Director provides direct supervision for program staff, interns and volunteers. The Director liaisons with programs across JF&CS to help staff identify and recognize legal concerns.  The Director develops and maintains relationships with legal providers in the community. The Director is responsible for the management of the pro-bono panel including: recruitment, ongoing support and management of administrative components. The Director is responsible for staying current on legal and benefit matters that impact clients of the Agency. The Director participates in budget planning, donor development and provides the vision for future planning.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Supervise program staff, interns and volunteers
  • Offer training on legal and benefit issue spotting for agency staff as needed
  • Establish and maintain connections to local legal services community
  • Oversee all aspects of the pro-bono panel of attorneys
  • Oversee SNAP/Benefits Advocacy services, including administrative appeal hearings
  • Stay current on legal and benefits issues that impact Agency clients
  • Ensure client records are kept in accordance with agency policy and standards of practice
  • Compile program reports as needed
  • Oversee grants and fiscal reporting

Educational/Experience Requirements:

  • Law degree and relevant experience in civil legal services, including SNAP and welfare benefits
  • Must be licensed to practice law in the state of MA
  • Experience working with low-come clients
  • Experience supervising / managing staff is a plus
  • Understanding of the public benefit systems and legal issues that low income clients face
  • Mature, independent, flexible with strong interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (excel, word, outlook, power point)
